The existence of the Leidsestraat dates back to the urban expansion of Amsterdam in the seventeenth century. Nowadays it is a well-known shopping street. With almost 50,000 pedestrians on a regular Saturday. The street view is characterized by the typical architecture Amsterdam is known for. Until 2020, however, one of the buildings did not fit this description. The Leidsestraat 100 was constructed in the 1980s. And one can describe its architecture as plain. A couple of years ago it was decided to do something about it.

De Architekten Cie. developed the winning design that gives the building the stature its location deserves. The design makes use of the existing main supporting construction and the basement. The building covers space for a store on the first three floors. And several apartments on the top three floors. The design of the building stands out because of the light-colored bricks at the façade. This creates a modern and timeless look. Commissioned by our client Amstelvliet Bouw, Koninklijke Tichelaar produced these unique bricks.

Our research lab developed a one-of-a-kind matt, pearl glaze in shades of white and beige. A process in which a close collaboration with the architect and client is a necessity. The nuances in the glaze, both on and between the stones and strips, are expressed in the degree of gloss and color. More than 20,000 bricks were produced in eleven different variants. Ranging in sizes from 190x90x65 mm to 35x90x65 mm. Applied to the façade the glazed bricks provide both a rich color and texture. The bricks will last for centuries due to the protection of the glaze and our high-quality standards.
