The experts from the Dutch Mammal Society formulated the eco-technical requirements of bats for a safe living environment. The knowledge and experience of Koninklijke Tichelaar shows that ceramic applications offer excellent solutions to meet these requirements. In collaboration with Koninklijke Tichelaar, industrial designer Dick van Hoff has designed prototypes based on both the specifications of the Mammal Society and the requirements for the design and construction.

As of January 1 2012, the Building Decree introduced that openings in the outer leaf may be larger than 1 cm for bats and other species protected by the Nature Conservation Act. This makes it possible to make the entire cavity accessible to the bats. However, the prerequisite is a free cavity of at least 3 cm. The mineral wool must have a hard, rough outer layer. If this is not an option to the different stakeholders, the space for bats can be minimized to smaller façade surfaces such as a brick balustrade.

Most commonly it is chosen to place special bat boxes in the cavity or outer cavity leaf. Ceramic is preferred because it has a stabilizing effect on the inside temperature and humidity. Although the cabinets are located in the building, they provide an enclosed place for the animals. Because the boxes are incorporated in a larger (brick) mass, the climatic conditions are overall stable. Therefore, the boxes are better suitable for maternity and cold winters than boxes installed directly on the façade. Bat boxes can either be built in such a way that they are clearly visible or in a way that they are almost invisible. Are you interested in our bat boxes?
