Year: 2020 -2023
Location: Eindhoven
Architect: INBO Architects
Project type: architecture
Material: Tiles
Product:

Glazed tiles, pigmented with iron sludge.

Brabant Water is a sustainable water supply company providing drinking and industrial water to 2.6 million residents and businesses. INBO Architects designed the new purification and pump buildings. The new site is a sustainable symbol of contemporary water production that reflects pride in technology and caring for nature.

In collaboration with Kirstie van Noort and Lotte de Raadt, we conducted research in our anniversary year on the application of iron sludge in clay and glazes, a residual of water purification. This resulted in beautiful outcomes. For the Brabant Water project, this technique was applied on a large scale for the first time. The 9,000 tiles, either fully or partially glazed, form an abstract reflection of glittering water. The use of iron sludge creates a beautiful pigment. Additionally, a byproduct from the production of drinking water in Brabant is given new life in this way, contributing to a sustainable, circular approach to raw materials.
