The Raadhuis in Hilversum is designed by W.M. Dudok (1884-1974), one of the most important architects in Dutch architectural history. In general, the quality of the materials used in the original construction was poor, therefore in 1990 decisions were made to comprehensively restore the building.
Koninklijke Tichelaar's contribution to the restoration consists of two phases. The first phase consisted of supplementing existing wall tiles in the glazes red, black, gold, blue and green. For the second phase, we provided Architect Dudok's masterpiece with approximately 14,000 new, unglazed floor tiles in yellow and red-brown. The choice for the two types of clay and various variations of tiles was determined after an extensive development process. We worked closely with our client and Van Hoogevest Architects during this process. This project was a big step for our organization. Because the knowledge gained not only enables us to carry out similar projects, but also provided the know-how to develop experimental materials that can be used in modern architecture.
