New Delft Blue - Poortmeesters

One of the latest projects Koninklijke Tichelaar worked on is New Delft Blue. Which entails the cladding of two imposing gates to the courtyard of Poortmeesters, a newly developed residential building in Delft. For its design Studio RAP was inspired by the traditional Delft Blue porcelain. But, as the name of the project already suggests, they gave a modern touch to it. The outcome? An idyllic natural scene of the courtyard framed with the decorative border of the gates. Approximately 2,000 custom-made tiles with a size of 50cm x 30cm will be applied to each of the two gates.

Last year Studio RAP printed the tiles in-house at Koninklijke Tichelaar with a unique ceramic 3d-printing technique. After that we carefully dried the tiles in special drying chambers before firing them. After which we glazed the tiles with a uniquely developed deep blue runny glaze. The glaze becomes liquid when exposed to extremely high temperatures. This causes the glaze to pool in the concave parts of the tiles while keeping the convex parts in the original color of the white-burning clay. Resulting in a smooth transition between tones of white and blue. Thereby highlighting the unique design of the tile. Interested in how the tiles complement each other when applied to the gates?
